Data Center Gets Green Certification

Saturday, August 06, 2005
The Fannie May Urbana Technology Center received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the US Green Building Council, reports say, making it the first facility of this kind to secure this rating.

According to reports, the 247,000 square-foot Urbana, Maryland-based data center was able to reduce its overall energy consumption by 20 percent. All the mechanical, electrical, and computer systems selected were also rated for maximum energy efficiency. Interior materials were picked on the basis of their sustainability and various strategies were implemented to reduce impact on the surrounding environment.

"The Urbana Technology Center's LEED certification will translate into significant life-cycle savings, while providing our employees with a healthier, more comfortable work environment," Brian Cobb, senior vice president for enterprise systems management for Fannie Mae, said in a report. "It also allows us to be a good neighbor within the local community."
